EUROPEAN CENTRE OF BYZANTINE AND POST-BYZANTINE MONUMENTS
The European Centre of Byzantine and Post - Byzantine Monuments (EKBMM) was established under Law 2557/1997 (Art.6 para.3) and is a Legal Entity of private law, overseen by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. Its headquarters are in Thessaloniki, in the Museum of Byzantine Culture.
The decision to base the Center in Thessaloniki is connected with the city's importance and with the role it played in the spread of the Byzantine culture to the European part of the Byzantine Empire and the Balkan countries in general. The EKBMM is administrated by a seven – member board appointed for a three-year term by the Minister of Culture.
The aim of the Centre is to promote the scientific research at a European and International level in the fields of museology, museography, conservation, restoration, and enhancement of Byzantine and Post-byzantine monuments and sites and portable works of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine art.
The Centre has been carrying out its aims successfully until today by planning and organising seminarial training courses, awarding scholarships for scientific studies, taking part in scientific research projects, technological development programmes, scientific activities and missions organised by international organisations, publishing scientific studies, and engaging in any other relevant activity.
In the framework of its field of interests the Center has established solid cooperation with institutions of the following countries: Albania, Algeria, Armenia, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, F.Y.R.o.M., Georgia, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey.
